A Crazy Excel World

You love your Excel spreadsheets and I love mine. We are all freaks! Now STOP there before you get too comfortable and happy with finding yet another crazy Excel addict like you. Those spreadsheets have no controls, but yet we treat them like pure truth calculating the same way they did yesterday even though someone else might have made updates. My intent is to challenge and not to offend those of us who have achieve great success riding the creations of our Excel masterpieces. The reality is that our Excel applications often grow into a house of cards. One “oops” edit to a cell formula when simply updating data and you’re toast. Try finding the hard coded value that snuck into some cell somewhere. Businesses Need To Up Their Technology Game

The day is a typical Tuesday and I’m looking around my desk wondering how many other executives at public companies share my frustration. It’s a little after 11am and I decided to check in with a colleague of mine at another company. My short email ends with the question: “Why does so much of our business technology seem overpriced and irrelevant?” How would you reply? I’m actually surrounded by a lot of great technology and fortunate to be working at a company that, in many ways, has moved forward with several successful business technology initiatives during recent years and is by many standards quite modern. What a sad statement that is when I consider the reality of what we now accept in business as “good” or “best in class.” The bar seems to keep dropping lower.
